Karachi’s affected areas likely to get normal water supply from today

KARACHI: Repair work on the damaged manifold chamber and main valves at Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation’s (KWSC) Dhabeji Pumping Station is in its final stages and water supply to affected areas of the city will restore on Thursday. KWSC spokesman said repair teams were working to their best capacity and the maintenance work was scheduled to be completed by 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday. After which the water transmission lines would be recharged. “Once the lines are recharged, water supply to the affected areas will begin to resume gradually. Normal supply to all affected localities was expected to be restored by Thursday.” The disruption occurred after a power breakdown there, at K-Electric end, on Tuesday. It triggered a technical fault in the manifold chamber and main valves at the K-2 Pump House of the Dhabeji Pumping Station. The power outage disrupted pumping operations, resulting in a temporary reduction in the volume of water supplied to Karachi, KWSC spokesman said. The Dhabeji Pumping Station is one of Karachi’s principal water supply installations, pumping millions of gallons of water daily from the Indus River System to the metropolis. On Tuesday, KWSC, through a media statement, had claimed that outage of power at KWSC’s Dhabeji Pumping Station had disrupted operations, reducing Karachi’s daily water supply by around 100 million gallons per day (MGD). In a clarification on Wednesday, K-Electric spokesperson stated that power supply to KWSC’s Dhabeji Pumping Station continues as normal. “Power supply from K-Electric is normal to all 22 motors at the Dhabeji Pumping Station. The fault affecting two motors is internal to the Karachi Water Corporation and is not related to K-Electric’s power supply.” K-Electric’s technical teams are present at the site and are providing technical assistance to the KWSC to help resolve the internal fault at the earliest.
