Dutch cabinet considers emergency powers for mayors to intervene in escalating demonstrations

The Dutch cabinet, led by ministers Heerma (Interior Affairs) and Van Weel (Justice and Security), is preparing measures to address problematic demonstrations. They are considering a 'emergency authority' for mayors, allowing them to intervene more directly and quickly when protests escalate into serious public order disturbances. This includes the ability to forcibly relocate demonstrations or terminate them faster in cases of acute threats to public safety. The police (ME) would also receive expanded powers to intervene more forcefully and swiftly during escalations. The plan involves amending the demonstration law.
