Julia Holter has announced a new album titled Materia, set for release on August 21 via Domino Records, as reported by Pitchfork. The record serves as a companion to her 2024 LP Something in the Room She Moves, according to both Stereogum and Pitchfork.
Alongside the announcement, Holter shared the lead single "Fantasy" and a music video directed by Dicky Bahto, Pitchfork noted. Stereogum described the track as a celestial, dancey piece that reflects a deep creative tension.
"a contradiction of the song feeling like willful abandon yet being the most laborious part of the record"
Holter revealed that "Fantasy" took over a year to produce and went through many transformations, according to both outlets. Pitchfork quoted her describing it as a "laborious undertaking" that required significant effort despite its seemingly effortless sound.
The album Materia continues Holter's exploration of intimate, textured soundscapes, building on the foundation of her previous work while introducing new sonic elements. Fans can expect the full record later this summer.
