Filmmaker Jorge R. Gutierrez, creator of "The Book of Life" and "Maya and the Three," has withdrawn from Amazon MGM Studios' generative AI animation initiative just days after his involvement was announced. Gutierrez was set to develop the animated series "Punky Duck" as part of the GenAI Creators' Fund, but he announced his departure following significant backlash from the creative community, according to multiple outlets including Variety and Deadline.
The project was one of three series greenlit under Amazon's AI pilot program, which was unveiled at the AI on the Lot conference in Los Angeles, as reported by IndieWire. Gutierrez's decision came after intense criticism from peers and fans, who pointed out his previous public opposition to AI tools, making his pivot to the technology particularly contentious, IndieWire noted.
"Actions speak louder than words," Gutierrez said in a public apology, according to Variety, adding that his original intent was to showcase artists through the initiative.
In his social media statement, Gutierrez apologized to those he upset and emphasized that he will no longer develop the "Punky Duck" project at Amazon, as reported by cartoonbrew.com and The Hollywood Reporter. Bleeding Cool noted that the controversy likely stemmed from broader concerns about AI-generated animation replacing human artists.
The filmmaker's withdrawal highlights the ongoing tension in the animation industry over the use of generative AI, with many creatives viewing such programs as a threat to traditional artistry and jobs, according to Deadline. Gutierrez's decision to step away, just two days after the project was announced, underscores the power of community backlash in shaping industry practices, The Hollywood Reporter added.
