JAMA Study: Teen Marijuana Use Doubles Risk of Psychosis and Bipolar Disorder

A landmark JAMA Health Forum study of 463,396 adolescents aged 13-17 found that teen marijuana use more than doubles the risk of developing psychotic disorders and bipolar disorder by young adulthood (age 26). Using electronic health records from Kaiser Permanente Northern California, researchers found that cannabis use typically preceded psychiatric diagnosis by 1.7-2.3 years. This is one of the largest longitudinal studies ever conducted on adolescent cannabis use and mental health outcomes.
