The International Olympic Committee has provisionally lifted its suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, marking a significant step toward Russia’s possible return to the Olympic movement ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Games. The Russian Olympic Committee was suspended in October 2023 after the IOC said Russia violated the Olympic Charter by recognizing regional Olympic councils in Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine, including Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia. The IOC said its executive board has now lifted the suspension, but a decision has not been made on whether Russian athletes will be allowed to compete under their national flag, display official colors, or have their anthem played at future Olympic events.Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev said the decision should clear the way for Russian athletes to make a full return to international competition.Russian athletes competed as neutrals at the 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Games due to restrictions connected to the war in Ukraine. The decision also comes as Russia continues to face scrutiny over a long-running doping controversy. The country has been under investigation since a 2015 report found evidence of systematic doping in Russian athletics and alleged a state-backed cover-up surrounding the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.Russian officials have repeatedly denied the existence of a state-sponsored doping program. The IOC says it will continue monitoring Russia’s activities and reserves the right to take additional action if necessary.Explore: NBCPalmSprings.com, where we are connecting the Valley.
