LM Studio's Bionic Agent Brings Open-Source AI to Real-World Tasks Without Storing User Data

LM Studio has released Bionic, a new AI agent designed to work with open-source language models on a user's own machine. The app, available now as an initial preview for Mac and Windows, moves beyond simple chat to handle coding, research, and document work, LM Studio announced. By running models locally or through open-source cloud providers, Bionic aims to give users control over their data and costs.
According to 9to5Toys, the new app "handles coding, research, and complex work with documents and files." LM Studio's own materials emphasize that Bionic is "an AI agent designed specifically for open models," positioning it as a tool for creative and professional tasks where sensitive data stays on the device.
"zero data retention and never training on user data"
The company makes user privacy a central selling point. LM Studio stated that Bionic commits to zero data retention and never uses customer data for training. This approach sets the agent apart from many cloud-based AI services that store and analyze user interactions for model improvement.
Beyond privacy, Bionic includes practical features for everyday use. LM Studio highlighted offline voice transcription and a voice keyboard, allowing users to dictate commands or notes without an internet connection. The agent also lets users manage expenses by choosing between local models and pay-as-you-go open-source cloud models.
With Bionic, LM Studio expands its footprint from the chat interface into a broader AI assistant. By keeping both the model and the data local, the company targets users who need powerful AI capabilities but are unwilling to trade away their privacy or cede control over their computing resources.
