India has emerged as one of the fastest growing digital economies of the world but its performance on global benchmarks measuring digital infrastructure, connectivity, AI-readiness and digital governance varies widely.India is a global leader on some AI-focused indicators of the State of India’s Digital Economy 2026 report, but is also challenged on some other fronts such as access to ICTs, digital infrastructure and e-governance services.Here’s India’s ranking in eight major global digital and AI indices:ICT Development Index (IDI): Ranked 130th of 176 countriesThe ICT Development Index ranks countries on their access to information and communication technologies, internet use and digital skills. India is around 130th, suggesting that while the pace of digital adoption has picked up, there are still large gaps in access to connectivity and ICT capability.Network Readiness Index (NRI): 45 out of 127 countriesIndia is ranked around 45th in the Network Readiness Index which measures digital readiness across technology, governance, people and economic impact. The ranking reflects progress in expanding the country’s digital ecosystem, but also points to room for improvement in overall readiness.e-Government Development Index (EGDI) 97th of 193 countriesThe EGDI measures the quality and availability of digital public services, telecommunications infrastructure and human capital. India’s position of around 97 indicates that there is still work to be done in building digital government capabilities and providing access to online public services.Government AI Readiness Index: ~46 of 193 countriesIndia is placed around 46th in the Government AI Readiness Index, which measures the preparedness of governments to adopt, regulate and deploy artificial intelligence across public administration.AI Preparedness Index (AIPI) : 71 of 174 countriesThe AI Preparedness Index ranks countries on AI infrastructure, talent, innovation and regulatory frameworks. India’s rank of 71st shows that although AI adoption is increasing, greater investment in enabling infrastructure and policy framework could enhance its competitiveness.Top 5 Global AI Vibrancy IndexIndia ranks in the top 5 countries in the Global AI Vibrancy Index that measures AI research output, patents, talent, investments and adoption. The ranking is a sign of the country’s growing AI ecosystem and research activity.Global AI Index: Top 10India also features in the top 10 countries in the world in the Global AI Index, which measures AI capability in research, infrastructure, talent and commercial activity, underscoring its growing role in the global AI landscape.State of India’s Digital Economy (SIDE) Index: 8th among 33 countriesIndia ranks eighth among 33 countries in the proprietary SIDE Index in the report. The framework measures digital progress along five pillars – Connect, Harness, Innovate, Protect and Sustain (CHIPS) – and offers a holistic view of a country’s digital economy maturity.India’s rankings indicate strong momentum in artificial intelligence and digital innovation, but also reflect continuing challenges around digital infrastructure, connectivity and public digital services.
