I thought about posting screenshots of the 38 sources, histories of science and technology, many of them multi-volume, that I used, but here's an easier way to perform a sniff test. Go online to and look at the Dictionary of Scientific Biography. It is 18 volumes, assembled by an international body of scholars over many years, and is as close to definitive as a single source can be. Search for Chinese or Japanese entries from 1400-1950. BTW: A search for "Iceland" in my Kindle version of Human Accomplishment turns up no mention whatsoever of it. I'd be curious to know what you found that I missed. And geneticist? Me? Really? OTOH, my Thai used to be pretty damn fluent. Including the Northeast Dialect and a fair bit of Lao.
