Paul W. Downs, co-creator and star of the Emmy-winning comedy series "Hacks," has definitively shut the door on any possibility of a spinoff. In a recent interview, Downs confirmed that a show centered on his character Jimmy and Megan Stalter's Kayla will never happen, according to both Variety and Vulture.
"The show was always intended to focus on the relationship between Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder)."
Downs elaborated that the creative team felt the series ended exactly as they had always planned, making any spinoff unnecessary. Variety reported that Downs explained the show's conclusion was designed from the beginning, and the creators do not want to alter it.
Vulture noted that Downs emphasized the ending was satisfying and complete, leaving no story thread dangling that would warrant additional episodes. The actor and writer framed the decision as a matter of artistic integrity, prioritizing the core narrative over commercial expansion.
The confirmation closes off speculation about extending the "Hacks" universe, even as the series continues to draw critical acclaim and Emmy nominations. For now, Deborah and Ava's story remains the sole focus, with no Jimmy-and-Kayla side project on the horizon.
