Flying Coach? Hope You Like Paying More for Less

If you've stepped onto a plane lately and thought, "Wait... were these seats always this small?"—you're definitely not imagining it.Airlines are making a big shift, and it's all about following the money. Instead of adding more affordable seats, many carriers are expanding first-class and premium sections because that's where the biggest profits are. The result? Travelers in coach are finding themselves with fewer seat choices, less legroom, more fees, and ticket prices that don't exactly feel like a bargain anymore. The discussion quickly turned into something every traveler can relate to: has flying become a tale of two passengers? If you're willing—or able—to spend thousands more, you get bigger seats, better meals, airport lounges, and early boarding. Everyone else? Well... enjoy boarding in Group 9 and trying not to elbow the stranger sitting six inches away.Paul Scott joked that today's economy cabin has so many levels it feels like there should be a "steerage" section. After one recent flight, he laughed that his body had molded itself to the shape of the airplane because the seats were so cramped. His view was simple: airlines are investing where customers are spending money, and right now, premium travelers are keeping the industry profitable.Tammy Bleck wasn't buying it. She argued airlines have gone too far by nickel-and-diming passengers for everything from checked bags to basic comforts that used to be included. She understands companies need to make money, but believes some of those profits should go toward improving the experience for everyone—not just the people sitting behind the curtain in first class. At the end of the day, it's a debate most travelers have probably had while wedged into a middle seat. Should airlines reward customers willing to pay more? Absolutely. But does that mean the rest of the plane has to feel like an afterthought? One thing most people seem to agree on: if airlines keep shrinking coach, don't be surprised if passengers start expecting a little more than a tiny bag of pretzels for the price of a plane ticket. ✈️ For more Coachella Valley News visit NBCPalmSprings.com
