Re-analysis of fluazinam neurotoxicity study contradicts original findings, reigniting calls for EU ban
By
Pippa Neill
Summary
A new re-analysis of a 2005 neurotoxicity study on the pesticide fluazinam has produced significantly different findings from the original manufacturer-funded research. The original study, conducted by Huntingdon Life Sciences on behalf of ISK (fluazinam's manufacturer), found no statistically significant effects on brain development in rat offspring. Based on that data, fluazinam was approved for use in the EU in 2008. However, campaigners are now arguing that the substance should be withdrawn from the market given the new contradictory findings. Fluazinam is classified as a PFAS fungicide, raising additional environmental and health concerns.
