Re-analysis of fluazinam study finds neurotoxicity concerns, campaigners call for EU ban

Summary

A new re-analysis of a 2005 study on the fungicide fluazinam has found significantly different results regarding its neurotoxicity compared to the original manufacturer-funded study. The original study, conducted by Huntingdon Life Sciences on behalf of ISK (the manufacturer), concluded there were no statistically significant effects on brain development in rat offspring. Based on that safety evaluation, fluazinam was approved for use in the EU in 2008. The new findings raise concerns about the pesticide's potential effects on brain development, and campaigners are now calling for the substance to be withdrawn from the market. Fluazinam is classified as a PFAS chemical.
