Leonardo's SignalTrace technology adds Bluetooth tracking to license plate readers to identify individuals
By
Bruce Schneier
Summary
Surveillance company Leonardo plans to add Bluetooth sensors to automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) through a technology called SignalTrace. This upgrade would allow the cameras to capture unique identifiers from mobile phones, wearables, and other Bluetooth-enabled devices inside passing vehicles, in addition to license plates. This would enable law enforcement to track specific individuals rather than just vehicles, raising significant privacy concerns as ALPRs are already widely deployed across the United States.
