New Delhi: England handed India their biggest defeat by runs in men’s T20 internationals, bowling them out for 76 in 11.4 overs to win the third T20I by 125 runs at Trent Bridge on Tuesday. The result gave England a 2-0 lead in the five-match series after the opening match was washed out. With two matches left, England cannot lose the series, while India must win both remaining games to avoid a series defeat. Brief scores England 201/7 in 20 overs: Phil Salt 70, Sam Curran 41 not out, Jos Buttler 36, Harry Brook 16, Will Jacks 14; Prince Yadav 2/30, Harshit Rana 2/40. India 76 all out in 11.4 overs: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi 13, Ishan Kishan 13, Abhishek Sharma 10, Axar Patel 10, Harshit Rana 9; Josh Tongue 4/28, Jofra Archer 3/29. England won by 125 runs. India captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to field. India made one change, bringing in Prince Yadav in place of Ravi Bishnoi. England were unchanged from the second T20I at Old Trafford. England innings: Salt, Curran take hosts past 200 England began slowly after being asked to bat. Arshdeep Singh opened with a maiden over, beating Phil Salt with movement and keeping both England openers quiet. Jos Buttler then gave England their first push. He struck 36 before Prince Yadav bowled him with his first delivery, leaving England at 43/1. Prince struck again when he removed England captain Harry Brook for 16, caught by Abhishek Sharma, as England reached 71/2. Jacob Bethell, who had made 76 in the previous match, could not repeat that innings. He was caught by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi off Harshit Rana. Harshit then removed Tom Banton for a duck next ball as England slipped to 111/4 after 12 overs. Salt, who had struggled early, changed the tempo in the second half of the innings. He was on 17 off 19 balls before finding rhythm against spin and pace. He reached his half-century in the 14th over and went on to make 70 off 44 balls before Axar Patel had him caught by Arshdeep Singh. Sam Curran then gave England the late lift. He made 41 not out off 24 balls and added quick runs with Will Jacks, who made 14 before being run out. Jofra Archer was also run out for 5 as England finished on 201/7. For India, Prince Yadav returned 2/30 in four overs on his T20I debut, while Harshit Rana took 2/40. Axar Patel picked up Salt’s wicket. Two England wickets came through run outs. India innings: Chase collapses inside powerplay India’s chase started with intent but fell apart almost immediately. Abhishek Sharma hit Josh Tongue for six but fell for 10 in the second over, caught by Salt at deep point. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi then struck two sixes in a five-ball 13 before gloving a Jofra Archer bouncer to Buttler. India were 29/2. Ishan Kishan also made 13 before pulling Tongue to Jacob Bethell. Shreyas Iyer made 5 and was caught by Bethell off Archer. Axar Patel was promoted up the order and hit 10 off four balls, including a four and a six, before edging Archer behind. India were 52/5 inside five overs. It was the first time India lost their first five wickets inside the powerplay in a men’s T20I. Tilak Varma was stumped by Buttler off Will Jacks for 3. Shivam Dube made 2 before edging Tongue behind. Arshdeep Singh was caught by Buttler off Adil Rashid for 4, and Harshit Rana made 9 before Tom Banton took a sharp catch off Tongue. Rashid ended the match by bowling Varun Chakravarthy as India were dismissed for 76 in 11.4 overs. Prince Yadav remained not out on 2. Tongue finished with 4/28, while Archer took 3/29 and was named Player of the Match. Jacks and Rashid took the remaining wickets as England completed the win before India could reach even 12 overs. India’s unwanted records The 125-run margin surpassed India’s previous biggest T20I defeat by runs, the 80-run loss to New Zealand in Wellington in 2019. India’s 76 was also their second-lowest all-out total in men’s T20Is. Their lowest remains 74 against Australia at Melbourne in 2008. The collapse was also India’s quickest all-out innings in the format. The innings lasted 11.4 overs, going past the previous quickest collapse of 17.2 overs in October 2015. He said India failed to adapt to the pitch and lost too many wickets in the powerplay while chasing 202. Brook said England adapted better after recognising that the surface was difficult when bowlers hit the top of the stumps. He praised Salt’s innings and the bowling plans executed by Archer, Tongue and the rest of the attack. The fourth T20I now becomes a must-win game for India. England, with pace, confidence and a 2-0 lead, go into the next match with control of the series.
