Washington, D.C. punk band Ekko Astral has announced an indefinite hiatus, canceling the release of their upcoming album The Beltway Is Burning. The band will play two final farewell concerts on August 22 in New York City and August 29 in Washington, D.C., which Pitchfork reported will span their entire catalogue as a celebration send-off. The decision comes just two years after their debut album Pink Balloons propelled them from the local scene to national attention.
According to Rolling Stone, Pink Balloons struck a chord with young Americans watching the 2024 election unfold into a repeat nightmare, earning the band opening slots for Jeff Rosenstock and PUP. The sudden success was overwhelming for members who were used to much smaller crowds. "Before this, if I sold 30 tickets to a show, I was like, 'I did it!'," guitarist Liam Hughes told Rolling Stone, reminiscing on their early days.
The band had completed work on a new record called The Beltway Is Burning but will not release it any time soon. Carmandragone.car.blog reported that the band said the album will no longer be released "any time soon," while Pitchfork noted that the hiatus is driven by a desire to prioritize other musical projects. The shelving of the album marks an abrupt end to a trajectory that felt unstoppable.
Thenedle drop.com described the past year as "turbulent" for the group, though specific reasons for the hiatus beyond musical priorities were not detailed. Rolling Stone noted that the band did not know how to make sense of their rapid rise, but that "it felt awesome." The farewell shows now offer fans a final chance to celebrate the catalog that turned Ekko Astral into a D.C. punk staple.
"They didn't know how to make sense of it all," Rolling Stone wrote of the band's whirlwind experience. "All they knew was that it felt awesome." The two shows will serve as a proper goodbye, with the band performing material from their entire discography as a final thank-you to the audience that helped them grow from selling 30 tickets to headlining tours.
