Dems vow Trump's 'Watergate' will end with him 'under oath': report
From the article
The House Oversight Committee's Jeffrey Epstein investigation hits its one-year mark this month with no finish line in sight. But now Democrats are openly signaling their intent to ramp up the investigation if they win control of Congress in the midterms, framing it as the administration's equivalent to Watergate, Politico reports. "This is just the beginning," Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-NM) declared. "I believe this is the administration's Watergate. I think that it's clear that they are complicit in covering crimes and shielding the president from accountability and evading the law, and so I'd like to see all of them in front of the committee under oath." That "under oath" demand carries new weight thanks to a "new precedent" Republican's have already established when the GOP -controlled committee successfully compelled former President Bill Clinton to testify under oath—a breakthrough that shatters the long-standing assumption that sitting or former presidents are immune from congressional interrogation. Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) is positioned to chair Oversight next year if Democrats sweep. That Clinton precedent, he noted, could "pave the way" for subpoenaing other commanders-in-chief. According to Politico, "That includes Trump, who has drawn scrutiny for his own relationship with Epstein. Democrats have argued the administration has concealed the extent of that relationship, but Trump has maintained that he and Epstein had a falling-out long before Epstein’s death by suicide behind bars in 2019. The president has not been charged with wrongdoing." Oversight Chair James Comer (R-KY) acknowledged the investigation will likely drag on indefinitely, with each deposition spawning new leads. "It's probably going to be hard because it seems like … after every deposition we get another name or two that we need to talk to," he conceded.
