Cristiano Ronaldo Confirms Final World Cup Appearance

Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed the 2026 World Cup will be his last, ahead of Portugal's round of 16 matchup with Spain on Monday in Arlington, Texas. The 41-year-old forward has appeared in six World Cups, spanning 2006 through 2026. Ronaldo became the first player in history to score in six different World Cups after netting against Uzbekistan during the group stage. "It's about enjoying it as much as possible," said Ronaldo. "This will be my last World Cup, but let's hope tomorrow isn't my last game." Ronaldo has recorded three goals so far in the tournament, including two against Uzbekistan and a penalty conversion versus Croatia in the round of 32, marking his first knockout-stage goal at a World Cup. "The day will come [when I retire from international football]," Ronaldo said. "But I'll be honest. Whatever happens tomorrow, Cristiano will leave with a clear conscience, not 100 percent, but 1000 percent. "Because I've given everything in football. I don't need it, I have a good life, but it's about passion. I play football because I love it. You have to enjoy every day. And I've scored three goals, I'm not doing too badly, right?" Ronaldo, who captured the 2016 European Championship with Portugal, said winning this World Cup is not necessary to complete his legacy. "I'm not lacking anything in life," Ronaldo said. "I'm not going to be more, or less, Cristiano because I win the World Cup. We have the qualities to win, but only one country can win it." Spain manager Luis de la Fuente praised Ronaldo ahead of the meeting between the two nations. "I'm a fan of Cristiano," said de la Fuente. "I'm a fan of players and people with ambition, character, who are tireless, who want to be better every day, who are examples for youngsters." Portugal, Spain and Morocco are scheduled to co-host the 2030 World Cup.
