RCMP have charged former Manitoba MP Inky Mark with several gun offences after seizing 439 firearms, an antique cannon, and $300,000 in cash from his home in Dauphin, Manitoba last week. The Canadian Press reported that Mounties made the seizure and laid charges, while CityNews added that the stockpile included a historic cannon.
Mark represented Dauphin in the House of Commons from 1997 and previously served as a member of Parliament for the riding. According to CityNews, the RCMP executed a search warrant at the property and discovered the weapons along with a large sum of money.
"including an antique cannon"
The inclusion of the antique cannon among the seized items drew particular attention, though police have not specified its condition or whether it was functional.
cinaradio.com reported that the firearms were "improperly stored" and that Mark has been charged with firearms trafficking in addition to other gun-related counts. The exact list of charges has not been fully detailed by authorities, but the severity of the haul has prompted a broader investigation.
"hundreds of improperly stored firearms"
The improper storage of such a large number of weapons raises safety concerns, though police have not indicated any immediate threat to the public. Mark is expected to appear in court to face the charges.
