The Country Music Association has appointed Brittany Schaffer as its next CEO, effective January 1, 2027, according to Variety. Schaffer, currently a dean at Belmont University and a former top executive in Spotify's country music operations, will succeed Sarah Trahern, who announced her retirement in January 2025 after 13 years leading the organization.
Billboard reported that Schaffer will succeed Trahern, who will retire from her role as CMA CEO at the end of the year. The transition marks a leadership change at one of country music's most influential trade organizations.
Variety noted that Schaffer brings a blend of academic and industry experience to the role, having served as a dean at Belmont University's Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business after a career at Spotify where she oversaw country music partnerships.
"The CMA describes the transition as a strategic plan to ensure continuity among staff, board, and members."
Both outlets highlighted the careful planning behind the succession, with the CMA emphasizing stability during the handoff from Trahern to Schaffer. The appointment positions Schaffer to guide the organization into its next chapter with a focus on continuity and collaboration.
