Summary
This article describes a new platform called the Modular Influenza Sampling Tunnel (MIST) that enables quantification and genotyping of infectious influenza virus in expelled respiratory particles. The MIST captures infectious virus from humans experimentally infected with influenza, revealing diverse, individual-specific viral loads and aerosolized variants that correlate with saliva and nasopharyngeal viral loads and symptoms. The findings indicate significant heterogeneity in transmission potential among infected individuals.
Key quotes
· 3 pulledInfluenza virus is transmitted via respiratory expulsions, but detecting infectious virus in expulsions is challenging.
The particles deposit on cell monolayers, enabling culture, quantification, and sequencing of viruses.
