Commission acts to secure Europe's maritime industrial sovereignty and high-tech leadership

The European Commission has launched a comprehensive Industrial Maritime Strategy to boost competitiveness, innovation and technological leadership in Europe’s maritime manufacturing and shipping industries. The strategy is built around three pillars. The first, ‘Build, Equip and Repair,’ will revitalise European shipyards through both supply and demand-side measures. These include actions promoting digital and circular manufacturing processes, maximising strategic use of public demand and funding, improving global level playing field and fostering strategic value chains through a new Industrial Maritime Alliance. The ‘Transport and Connect’ pillar will promote a high-quality shipping sector, streamline administrative bureaucracy, accelerate green and digital transitions, and reinforce the EU’s global maritime influence. To safeguard security, the ‘Secure and Protect’ pillar aims to strengthen Europe’s maritime defence, underwater and dual use capabilities. By mobilising EU, national and private funding, supporting EU innovation deployment and securing a skilled workforce and high-quality jobs, the strategy aims to reinforce Europe’s industrial sovereignty, trade, and economic security, while ensuring the sector’s twin transition. It is adopted together with the EU Ports Strategy, boosting the competitiveness, resilience, security and sustainability of Europe’s ports.
