Coal India Limited ( CIL ) and U.P. Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited ( UPRVUNL ) have signed a joint venture (JV) agreement to develop renewable energy projects in Uttar Pradesh, according to a regulatory filing dated July 5, 2026. The agreement was executed on July 3, 2026. While the companies confirmed the formation of the JV, they have not yet disclosed details regarding the planned renewable energy capacity, investment value or project implementation schedule. The partnership is expected to support the development of renewable energy projects across Uttar Pradesh , aligning with efforts to diversify the state's electricity generation mix and expand clean energy capacity. Additional information on the projects is expected to be announced in due course. The joint venture is part of Coal India’s broader strategy to strengthen its presence in the renewable energy sector alongside its traditional coal business. The development follows CIL's recent Letter of Award (LoA) from Bundelkhand Saur Urja Limited (BSUL) to establish a 600 MW (2×300 MW) solar power project at the Jalaun Solar Power Park in Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh Strengthens Renewable Capacity Uttar Pradesh has continued to expand its renewable energy portfolio in recent years. As of the end of May 2026, the state had installed more than 7.1 GW of renewable energy capacity, including around 500 MW of large hydropower. Solar remains the dominant renewable source, accounting for nearly 4.2 GW of the state's installed capacity, while no utility-scale wind power capacity has been commissioned so far. The new joint venture is expected to contribute to the state's ongoing clean energy expansion.
