Standardized Directory-Based Skills Format Emerges for AI Coding Agents
By
Mr Bagel
A new standardized format for defining reusable skills in AI-powered coding tools is taking shape, anchored by the directory-based Skills system in Claude Code and an open specification now hosted at agentskills.io. The format, which lets developers automate repetitive workflows and enforce project conventions, has evolved from simple markdown files into a more structured approach that can be shared across agents.
"Originally structured as single markdown files, Skills have evolved into a directory-based format stored under .claude/skills/"
ShortSingh reported that each skill directory now requires a SKILL.md file and can include supporting references, scripts, and assets. A formal frontmatter specification, reflecting changes made since January 2026, has been adopted as an open standard, making skills portable beyond just Claude Code.
The updated format supports personal, per-project, and plugin-level scoping, allowing teams to distribute workflows consistently. Meanwhile, a GitHub repository called MengTo/Skills has emerged as a collection of such agent skills tailored for designers and builders.
"Agent skills for designers and builders using Codex, Claude, Cursor, and other AI coding agents"
This repo, maintained on GitHub, provides a library of ready-to-use skills that target multiple AI coding agents beyond just Claude, including Codex and Cursor. The combination of an open standard and a growing repository signals a push toward interoperability in the AI-assisted development space.
With the agentskills.io standard and community collections like MengTo/Skills, developers now have a consistent way to package and share automation tools across different coding agents, reducing duplication and improving workflow portability.
