A California jury has ordered Chris Brown and his company Black Pyramid LLC to pay nearly $13 million in damages to a housekeeper who was severely mauled by a dog on Brown's property. The verdict, reached on June 30, 2025, found the singer liable for negligence in the December 2020 attack.
"Maria Avila was mauled by Brown's 200-pound dog while working at his California home."
The attack left Avila with life-altering injuries, and the jury's award reflects the severity of the incident. According to Rolling Stone, the verdict includes $12.9 million for Maria Avila for negligence and an additional $885,000 for her sister Patricia Avila, who was working alongside Maria and suffered emotional distress from witnessing the attack.
Rolling Stone also reported that Maria's husband filed a claim for loss of consortium due to the lasting impact of his wife's injuries. The jury held both Brown and his company responsible for the dog's actions, which occurred on the property where Avila was employed as a housekeeper.
The case highlights the legal consequences of keeping a large security dog on a residential property without adequate safeguards. Brown and Black Pyramid LLC now face a substantial financial penalty for the attack that has permanently changed the lives of the two women involved.
