China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, just completed its longest deployment ever — 40 days at sea, sailed provocatively near Japan as a signal of Beijing's anger. But the number that matters is the comparison: America's Gerald R. Ford has logged nearly 300 days. The Liaoning began as a rusting Soviet hull bought from Ukraine "for a casino" — and in a decade it seeded a fleet that now includes a catapult-equipped supercarrier, with a nuclear-powered giant reportedly next.
