CATL and Alfen expand partnership with massive sodium-ion battery storage deal for Europe

Dutch energy storage system integrator Alfen and Chinese battery giant CATL have signed a 5 GWh partnership to deploy sodium-ion battery energy storage systems across Europe. The agreement, announced by multiple outlets, marks a major step in the companies' collaboration and one of the largest sodium-ion grid storage commitments on the continent.
"The agreement marks a new phase in their collaboration, which began with a long-term battery supply agreement established in 2023."
That earlier deal focused on lithium-ion technology. The new sodium-ion pact, according to pv-magazine, builds directly on that foundation, signaling a strategic shift toward alternative chemistries as the companies scale up in Europe.
pbxscience reported that the project is "one of Europe's largest sodium-ion grid storage projects," noting CATL is betting on a 30-year battery life. While sodium-ion cells typically offer lower energy density than lithium-ion, their longer cycle life and reliance on abundant materials make them an attractive option for stationary storage.
CarNewsChina framed the deal as CATL moving to "power the European grid" with the new partnership. The 5 GWh figure represents a significant volume of storage capacity, enough to back up renewable energy for hundreds of thousands of homes, though specific deployment timelines and locations have not been disclosed by the partners.
