CAA Blasts Meta for Making Users Manually Block AI Use of Their Public Instagram Photos

Creative Artists Agency (CAA) has publicly criticized Meta over its new Muse Image AI model, which generates photos of individuals using their public Instagram handles. The agency, which represents many of Hollywood's biggest stars, called out the platform's opt-out policy, arguing it unfairly shifts the burden of protecting likeness and privacy onto users rather than the company building the AI tool.
"No one’s name, image, likeness, voice, or creative work should be used by any third party, including AI models, without clear, documented consent."
CAA issued its statement Wednesday night, according to Whatfinger. The agency’s objection centers on the fact that Meta’s policy requires users to actively block access if they do not want their content used for AI training. The model allows anyone to generate an AI photo simply by entering a public Instagram handle, raising significant copyright and privacy concerns.
Variety reported that while private accounts and users under 18 are automatically opted out of the system, public accounts are included by default. CAA highlighted the particular risks for celebrities and public figures, whose likenesses are especially valuable and vulnerable to unauthorized use. The agency argues that Meta should adopt an opt-in framework, placing the responsibility for consent on the technology company rather than on individual users.
