BSNL launches Rs 1.34 lakh phone that works where mobile networks don't
From the article
New Delhi: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has introduced an Inmarsat satellite phone priced at Rs 1,34,166, targeting users who need reliable communication in places where conventional mobile networks do not work. Unlike a smartphone, the device is designed to operate through satellite connectivity, enabling voice calls from remote, inaccessible and network-dark regions across India. According to BSNL, the satellite phone is intended for specialised applications rather than everyday consumer use. It is aimed at sectors such as Defence, maritime operations, disaster response, mining, remote industrial sites and adventure expeditions, where maintaining communication can be critical. When conventional mobile networks can’t reach, the BSNL Satellite Phone keeps you connected. Designed for challenging environments, making it an ideal solution for Defence, Maritime, Disaster Response, Mining, Remote Operations and Adventure Travel. BSNL said the device provides connectivity even when conventional cellular infrastructure is unavailable or has been disrupted due to natural disasters or geographical challenges. Not available through regular retail outlets The satellite phone is not sold like a regular mobile handset. Interested users must contact BSNL directly and explain their requirement, as satellite phones are meant for specific operational and institutional use cases. The public sector telecom operator has listed the device at Rs 1,34,166, inclusive of all taxes. Customers can obtain further details by contacting BSNL or visiting the nearest BSNL office. Why satellite phones matter Unlike conventional mobile phones that rely on nearby cellular towers, satellite phones communicate directly with satellites orbiting the Earth. This allows them to function in remote mountains, deserts, forests, offshore waters and disaster-hit regions where terrestrial telecom networks may be unavailable or damaged. Satellite phones are widely used by armed forces, emergency responders, shipping companies, exploration teams and organisations operating in isolated locations. In emergencies such as floods, earthquakes or cyclones, they often remain one of the few reliable means of communication when regular telecom infrastructure fails. With the launch, BSNL is expanding its satellite communication offerings as demand grows for resilient connectivity in remote and mission-critical environments.
