Prashant Kishor enters electoral fray again, set to contest Bankipur by-election in Bihar
BJP fields Abhishek Kumar in Bankipur as Prashant Kishor eyes breakthrough win
From the article
New Delhi: The BJP on Tuesday fielded Abhishek Kumar as its candidate for the Bankipur Assembly bypoll, setting up a high-profile contest against Jan Suraj founder Prashant Kishor in a seat that has long been one of the party's strongest urban bastions in Bihar. The candidature was announced through a letter issued by BJP national general secretary Arun Singh. Abhishek Kumar, a former president of the Patna Mahanagar Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, will contest the bypoll necessitated by the resignation of Nitin Nabin, who vacated the seat after becoming Bihar BJP president and subsequently entering the Rajya Sabha. BJP bets on organisation over legacy Bankipur has remained a BJP stronghold for nearly three decades. Nitin Nabin represented the constituency for almost 20 years, winning successive Assembly elections and establishing a strong political network in the area. Before him, the seat was held by his father, making the constituency closely associated with the Nabin family's political legacy. Instead of choosing a member of the Nabin family, the BJP has opted for a younger organisational leader, signalling confidence in the party's cadre strength and urban support base. Prashant Kishor seeks first electoral success For Prashant Kishor, the bypoll is more than a contest for a single Assembly seat. The Jan Suraj founder is seeking his first significant electoral victory after spending the past few years building his organisation across Bihar through statewide outreach campaigns. A victory in Bankipur would give his fledgling party legislative representation and provide momentum ahead of the 2027 Bihar Assembly elections. However, he faces an uphill battle in a constituency that has consistently voted for the BJP. What the contest means The Bankipur bypoll is expected to serve as an important political barometer. For the BJP-led NDA, retaining the seat would reaffirm its dominance in urban Bihar and demonstrate that the party's support remains intact despite the departure of a long-serving MLA. For Jan Suraj, the election offers an opportunity to test whether Prashant Kishor's popularity and campaign against traditional politics can translate into votes against a well-entrenched party organisation. Even a strong performance could boost the party's credibility ahead of the next Assembly elections, while a victory would mark a significant milestone in Bihar's evolving political landscape. With the BJP banking on its formidable organisational machinery and Bankipur's long-standing loyalty, and Prashant Kishor seeking to convert his political campaign into electoral success, the bypoll is set to be one of Bihar's most closely watched political contests this year.
