BBC Alba, the Gaelic-language broadcaster, will be the only place on the BBC to show live nightly coverage of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, according to BBC and Yahoo News New Zealand. The games begin on 23 July.
The decision means that viewers across the UK who do not receive BBC Alba will have limited access to the event on free-to-air television. BBC Alba is available on satellite and online but not on all Freeview channels, restricting its reach.
SNP MSP David Linden has written to UK Government ministers urging them to make the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games a free-to-air event. He argued it is "simply wrong" that the games will only be available on subscription-based TNT Sports, as reported by holyrood.com.
Currently, the BBC's nightly live coverage on BBC Alba remains the only free-to-air option, but Linden's call highlights ongoing concerns about public access to major sporting events. The UK Government has not yet responded to his letter.
