Paramount+ has set a July 25 release date for "Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender," an animated sequel film that follows the original series. The announcement came with a trailer giving fans a first look at the new adventure, according to TVLine. The film will also debut in theaters on the same day, Decider reported.
Set after the events of the original show, the movie catches up with Aang and his friends in their twenties as they confront a new threat, TVLine detailed. The project has weathered an earlier setback, as IGN noted: "The Avatar: The Last Airbender movie that suffered such a devastating leak earlier this year finally has a release date on Paramount+." That leak, which IGN characterized as devastating, generated buzz but did not derail the film's path to release.
"The movie is directed by Lauren Montgomery and written by Tim Hedrick and Christopher Yost, based on a story by ATLA co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino." The involvement of the original co-creators in the story should reassure longtime fans hungry for authentic continuation of the Avatar universe, as Decider highlighted.
Eric Nam voices the adult Aang in the film, TVLine reported, rounding out a cast that also includes returning characters. The sequel is a key piece of Paramount's broader strategy to expand the Avatar franchise across streaming and theatrical platforms, TVLine added. With both a digital and cinema launch, the July 25 date marks a major moment for the beloved animated series' next chapter.
