Disney+ has ordered a pilot for a television series adaptation of the 2006 teen fantasy romantic comedy 'Aquamarine', with Emma Roberts set to reprise her role as Claire Brown as a guest star and executive producer, according to Deadline. Variety reported that the pilot is also being developed for Disney Channel, marking a dual-platform approach.
The pilot introduces a new protagonist, a teenage girl named Coral who moves to a seaside town and begins investigating her mother's disappearance. Deadline noted that the story will reveal how Coral's mother was connected to the world of the original film, effectively expanding the 'Aquamarine' mythology for a new generation.
Both outlets reported that the project brings together key talent from the original film. Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, who directed the 2006 movie, will direct the pilot. Producer Susan Cartsonis is also returning, and Sarah Watson, creator of 'The Bold Type', has been tapped to write the pilot. Variety added that the original film was based on a novel by Alice Hoffman.
This continuation arrives 19 years after the original film's release, with Roberts stepping back into a familiar role while a fresh storyline centered on a new character takes the lead. The involvement of both Disney+ and Disney Channel suggests the company sees broad potential for the property across its streaming and cable audiences.
