Summary
This study investigates how antibiotics disrupt the gut microbiome and trigger inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)-like proteolytic activity. Using fecal metagenomics and metaproteomics, researchers analyzed patients with pouchitis, ulcerative colitis (UC), and non-IBD controls before and during antibiotic exposure. Results show that antibiotics increase pancreatic protease activity and fecal proteolytic activity while reducing bacterial protease inhibitors across all groups, disrupting the epithelial barrier. The study highlights metaproteomics as a powerful tool for understanding host-microbiome interactions.
