'Another big problem for Trump': GOP spirals as mounting costs balloon in Iran
From the article
President Donald Trump is resuming large-scale hostilities with Iran as his ceasefire memorandum falls apart — but meanwhile on Capitol Hill, Republicans are starting to sweat about the price tag. According to Punchbowl News , the administration has already requested Congress "approve $67 billion in supplemental funding to cover the cost of military operations against Iran," a figure that is certain to increase with fighting resuming. Democrats, however, are demanding further information on Trump's war plans and his exit strategy as a commitment for backing any additional funding, according to the report. Punchbowl News described the need for Iran funding, both past and future campaigns, as "another big problem for Trump and GOP congressional leaders." This comes as Trump demands $350 billion in supplemental defense spending, as well as the voter restriction bill known as the SAVE America Act, to be attached to the Pentagon budget bill, the report notes. This ask "has run headfirst into skepticism from House Republicans that they could jam through a package that large on a party-line vote, as well as some outright Senate GOP opposition," noted Punchbowl. Republicans now fear the economy, which was slowly stabilizing while the ceasefire memorandum was in effect, could to go off the rails again, Punchbowl noted. Previously declining oil prices are climbing once more, noted the report, "with Brent crude futures nearing $80 per barrel on Wednesday before settling back. Average gas prices had fallen to under $3.80 per gallon nationally in the wake of the June 14 ceasefire, but those may be heading higher again" — and that could trigger another round of general inflation, "which is definitely not what vulnerable House and Senate Republicans need less than four months from Election Day."
