New browser extension filters counterfeit junk from Amazon searches

A new free Chrome extension called Knockoff aims to clean up Amazon search results by filtering out counterfeit, pseudo-brand, and unbranded junk. The tool, described as "fair-source" on its website, targets the flood of low-quality products that often crowd out legitimate items on the online retailer's platform.
According to a report on Hacker News, Knockoff offers several features to help users control their shopping experience. The extension can hide, dim, or label filtered listings, remove sponsored ads entirely, and allows users to trust or block specific brands. It also comes with three filter levels: Relaxed, Standard, and an additional level that adds suspect brand names to the filter.
"filters out the gibberish factory brands that are typically favored over quality products in the online retailer's search results"
Knockoff's tagline, as noted by both its own website and Boing Boing, is "Amazon, without the knockoffs." The extension is designed to address a persistent frustration for online shoppers who wade through pages of indistinguishable storefronts and generic product names.
The tool is currently available for Chrome, and its fair-source nature means the code is open for inspection. Whether it can keep pace with Amazon's constantly shifting marketplace remains to be seen, but for now it offers a practical way to cut through the clutter.
