Amazon's plan for a new last-mile distribution center in Chicago's Gage Park neighborhood took a major step forward Thursday when the Chicago Plan Commission granted its first city approval, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. The 235,137-square-foot facility will be built at the former Central Steel & Wire plant site, which Amazon purchased in 2021 for $35 million.

This will be Amazon's fourth last-mile center in Chicago. These facilities serve as the final stop in the delivery process before packages arrive at customers' doors, with the goal of enabling faster and more efficient deliveries, according to the outlet. The company already operates three other last-mile centers in the city, including a Bridgeport location that opened in July 2025.

The site purchase was one of Amazon's biggest land deals in Chicago at the time, the outlet reported. The approval from the Plan Commission is an early but crucial milestone for the project, which still requires additional city approvals before construction can begin.

The new distribution center is expected to further strengthen Amazon's delivery network in the city's southwest side, building on the network of hubs already serving Chicago customers.
