Amaira Meena case: Why the Neerja Modi School chargesheet has triggered fresh outrage

Jaipur: Eight months after nine-year-old Amaira Meena died by suicide at Jaipur's Neerja Modi School, the case has returned to the spotlight after her family questioned the police chargesheet, alleging it leaves out the school's principal and founder while invoking weaker legal provisions against the accused. Amaira, a Class 4 student, died on November 1, 2025, after jumping from the fourth floor of the school building. The incident sparked nationwide outrage after her parents claimed she had endured sustained bullying for nearly 18 months and that repeated complaints to the school were ignored. The family has alleged that the chargesheet filed by Jaipur Police fails to fix accountability on the school's top management. They have demanded that the principal and the founder be named as accused and said they would challenge the investigation before the Rajasthan High Court. The parents have also objected to the legal provisions invoked in the chargesheet, arguing that the alleged institutional negligence and failure to protect the child warrant more stringent charges. The case drew widespread attention after the family released CCTV footage obtained from the school. According to the parents, the footage shows Amaira approaching her class teacher multiple times on the day of the incident seeking help, but receiving no meaningful response. The family has maintained that Amaira was bullied for nearly 18 months by classmates, who allegedly used abusive language, including remarks with sexual undertones. They have alleged that despite repeated complaints, the class teacher dismissed the issue and told the child to "adjust" instead of taking corrective action. The case also prompted scrutiny of the school's anti-bullying and child protection mechanisms. A CBSE inquiry reportedly found that Amaira had been subjected to prolonged bullying and that mandatory grievance redressal and counselling systems existed largely on paper. Following the inquiry, the board revoked the school's affiliation, while the Rajasthan education department barred fresh admissions in senior classes for specified academic sessions. The family's objections to the chargesheet have once again raised questions over institutional accountability in schools, the implementation of anti-bullying protocols, and whether criminal investigations adequately address alleged negligence in cases involving children's safety and mental well-being.
