Adobe has acquired Topaz Labs, an AI company specializing in image and video enhancement that has been operating for over two decades and won an Emmy last year, Variety and TechCrunch reported. The deal will bring Topaz's tools into Adobe's Firefly AI studio, enterprise products, and Creative Cloud suite, giving creators more control over image and video quality, according to Variety.

Adobe Snaps Up Emmy-Winning AI Enhancement Startup Topaz Labs

Topaz Labs was founded more than twenty years ago and has built a reputation for pushing the boundaries of AI-assisted media. Variety noted that the company developed 'Neurostream' technology, which enables AI models to run locally on consumer devices, broadening accessibility. This local processing capability is key to making advanced enhancement tools available without requiring cloud infrastructure.

The company's product lineup includes specific AI models for different tasks. TechCrunch reported that Topaz Labs 'has developed AI models like Astra for video upscaling and Wonder for image retouching,' as well as technology for running large video models on consumer-grade GPUs. That focus on consumer hardware compatibility could make the acquisition valuable for Adobe's user base of individual creators and small studios.

Adobe plans to integrate Topaz's tools across its creative applications. According to TechCrunch, this includes bringing the AI models into the Creative Cloud suite, which would allow users to access upscaling and retouching features directly within Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and other tools. The move continues Adobe's broader push to embed generative AI into its products while maintaining performance on local machines.

'give creators more control over image and video quality'

With Topaz's two decades of experience and its Emmy-winning technology, Adobe gains not only software but also deep expertise in running AI efficiently on local hardware. The acquisition signals that the company sees offline AI processing as a competitive advantage in the creative tools market.
