Review: The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind musical charms at London's @sohoplace
A review of the new musical adaptation of William Kamkwamba's story "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind," currently playing at @sohoplace in London. The musical tells the true story of how 13-year-old William, forced to drop out of school during a famine in rural Malawi, used his engineering mind to build a windmill and bring electricity to his village. The reviewer finds the production charming and mostly successful.
Key quotes
William Kamkwamba's story has been told before – in a viral TED talk; in his memoir, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind; and in the film adaptation of the same name. But now it's a musical, currently playing at @sohoplace in London until 18 July, and a charming one at that.
Then-13-year-old William (played in the musical by Alistair Nwachukwu), the son of farmer Trywell (Sifiso Mazibuko), possessed a brilliant engineering mind, but had to drop out of school for lack of funds.
