Varda Space Industries partners with United Therapeutics to commercialize drug manufacturing in microgravity

Varda Space Industries, based in El Segundo, California, is commercializing the production of pharmaceutical drugs in microgravity. The company is collaborating with United Therapeutics to test and produce novel molecules in orbit, leveraging the unique properties of chemical mixtures under weightless conditions. Varda's chief strategy officer Michael Reilly describes this as the first commercial path to products made in space. The scientific principle involves exploiting how surface tension dominates over gravity in microgravity, allowing for novel molecular formations not possible on Earth.
