Affordable housing bill becomes law without Trump's signature as president protests election reform

President Donald Trump allowed a bipartisan housing bill to become law without his signature on Friday, letting the midnight deadline pass as he protested stalled election reform legislation. The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, which passed both the House and Senate last month with strong bipartisan support, automatically took effect after Trump declined to either sign or veto it, according to reports from KESQ and eldiario.es.

The measure aims to ease the nation's housing affordability crisis at a time when home prices have hit record highs, KETV reported. Despite the pressing need and the bill's bipartisan backing, Trump took no action on the legislation until the 10-day deadline expired. Political analyst Amy Suskind criticized the move, calling it "one of the least politically astute moves that I can remember" in a post on X.

"He just doesn't care."

Trump said he would not sign the housing bill "in protest" of the Senate failing to pass the SAVE America Act, a controversial federal elections overhaul proposal, Political Wire reported. The president did not issue a formal veto, meaning the legislation became law without his endorsement, CNN reported via KESQ. "I will not sign the Housing Bill, which has been fully approved by..." Trump stated, according to KESQ's coverage.

Under the Constitution, a bill presented to the president becomes law after 10 days if he takes no action and Congress is in session. With the deadline having passed, the housing law now takes effect despite Trump's refusal to endorse it. The move underscores the president's willingness to sacrifice bipartisan legislation in pursuit of his election priorities, even as analysts question the political calculus. Raw Story noted that Trump "canceled" any action on the bill, and eldiario.es highlighted that the law stands regardless of his protest.
