At least two people were killed and seven others were injured, including two police officers, in shootings across Chicago during the Independence Day holiday weekend.
Among those injured were two Chicago police officers who were shot by a man during a traffic stop around 5 p.m. Friday in South Shore, according to police Supt. Larry Snelling.
The officers, identified by Chicago Sun-Times sources as Carl Williams, 27, and Esteban Cervantes, 30, were described as having non-life-threatening injuries.
After the man fled, the officers caught up to him in the 7900 block of South Chappel Avenue. During a struggle, the man pulled a gun from a bag and shot Williams in his protective vest, Snelling said. Williams fired several shots, hitting the suspect several times, according to Snelling. Cervantes also was hit, though Snelling said that shooting is under investigation as to whether it was friendly fire. Cervantes was shot in the arm, officials said.
The suspect was in critical condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Early Friday, a man was found dead in Pilsen. The 52-year-old was found unresponsive about 4:50 a.m. outside in the 1900 block of South Canalport Avenue, Chicago police said. He suffered head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Police were also investigating the death of a woman who shot herself early Saturday in Portage Park. The woman, 47, was in an argument with a man who was armed with a gun in the 5000 block of West Sunnyside Avenue around 3:30 a.m. The woman disarmed the man and shot herself in the head, police said. She was taken to Lutheran General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police were investigating the shooting as a homicide.
At least four others were injured in shootings since 5 p.m. Thursday:
- A 31-year-old man was shot in the 7200 block of South Green Street 9:55 p.m. Thursday, police said. The man was shot in the leg and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.
- Minutes later, a 51-year-old man was shot by a male during an argument in the 6500 block of South Claremont Avenue. He was struck in the arm and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was in serious condition, police said.
- On Friday, an 18-year-old man was shot while walking in the 6000 block of South Indiana Avenue around 8:35 p.m. He was shot by someone who was in a nearby group, police said. The man was struck in the buttocks and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was in fair condition.
- A 54-year-old man was shot about 6 a.m. Saturday during an argument with a male in the 7900 block of South Ashland Avenue. The man suffered gunshot wounds to the hip and thigh and was taken in fair condition to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
