Today in art, the New York Film Festival is the main event, with Tony Gilroy's 'Behemoth!' drawing two strong reviews. But a new Muslim film festival in Manhattan is the more interesting story, it's not trying to counter stereotypes, it's trying to replace them entirely.
Two New York festivals are making noise today, one for a long-awaited return and one for a fresh start.
David Ehrlich calls Tony Gilroy's 'Behemoth!' a complex, elegant drama that defies its bombastic title. The film uses nine composers for a diegetic soundtrack, which is a weirdly ambitious structural choice for a movie about a cellist.
Pete Hammond frames the same film as Gilroy's lyrical love letter to cinema music, with Pedro Pascal playing a lifelong cellist at a turning point. Both reviews agree it's sophisticated, but neither calls it a crowd-pleaser.
The New York Muslim Film Festival launches October 11 with 12 short films from seven countries. Artistic director Hassan Babar says the goal isn't counter-narrative but establishing Muslim stories as the 'establishing paradigm.' That's a smarter framing than most identity-focused festivals manage.
