Summary

This study examines how the American Medical Association (AMA) shaped the U.S. health insurance system after World War II by launching a nationwide campaign to weaken support for National Health Insurance. Working with the political PR firm Campaigns, Inc., the AMA framed public health insurance as "socialized medicine" while simultaneously promoting private health insurance enrollment. Using newly assembled archival data, the research finds that greater exposure to the campaign reduced public support for a national health insurance system.
