Boy George and Culture Club have re-recorded their 1983 hit "Karma Chameleon" using artificial intelligence to recreate the original vocal characteristics, Rolling Stone reported. The new version will be available on vinyl in red, gold, and green with reimagined cover art, according to the same outlet.
The release launches Artists Included, a music technology company co-founded by Boy George's manager Paul Kemsley and entertainment attorney Jeremy Rosen, with Boy George serving as creative director, Rolling Stone reported. Stereogum noted that the venture is an AI-assisted re-recording company aimed at helping artists regain control over their master recordings.
"The Culture Club frontman, who has never owned the masters to hits like 'Karma Chameleon,' is embracing AI technology to create new versions of classic songs, allowing artists to reclaim ownership and revenue from their work," Stereogum reported.
This represents a notable shift for Boy George, who has previously been critical of progressive trends, according to Stereogum. The initiative highlights legacy artists' efforts to regain control of their master recordings through new technology, Rolling Stone reported.
owkid.com described the move as part of a growing trend in the music industry where artists are leveraging artificial intelligence to reimagine their legacies and regain agency over their life's work. The venture aims to help artists reclaim ownership and creative control over their catalogs, the outlet added.
