An asteroid has been officially named after the late musician Elliott Smith. Independent filmmaker Orlando Campopiano conceived the idea while listening to Smith's song "Shooting Star" from the posthumous album From A Basement On The Hill. He collaborated with Smith's estate to submit a proposal to the International Astronomical Union, which approved the naming.
