Wrote this up after one too many "the row updated but the event never fired" incidents. It walks through why the dual-write problem is unavoidable with two independent systems, why exactly-once and two-phase commit don't rescue you for payments, and how the outbox pattern degrades to safe duplicates instead of silent losses. Happy to discuss tradeoffs, especially polling vs CDC.
