Summary

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck offshore northwest of Cuba on June 8, 2026, making it the largest earthquake on record in the Gulf of Mexico. Weak to light shaking was felt across parts of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, all of Florida, and presumably much of Cuba. Over 5,000 people reported feeling the shaking to the USGS. Reports from Cuba are sparse, but coastal areas of Mexico experienced clear shaking strong enough to nearly knock over a television, while Florida residents felt milder tremors from over 500 kilometers away.
