The spirit I wanted the series to have wasn't one that was naturally there. It was much more ebullient and fun and unpredictable. In order to try to explain that, I said, 'I want it to feel like what it's like when you hang around with Marty Short.'

I've known Marty for over 30 years, and he's one of the funniest people I've ever met. But he's also deeply thoughtful and surprisingly vulnerable.

Working with Spielberg and Lucas on 'Raiders' was a masterclass in filmmaking. They taught me that the best stories come from character, not spectacle.
